Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about getting started, licensing, security and plugins.
What is ProxmoxVEx? ∨
ProxmoxVEx is a web-based management layer for Proxmox VE, VMware ESXi and XCP-ng. It provides a unified dashboard, role-based access control, automation, monitoring, backups, VM↔LXC workload conversion and a plugin marketplace.
Is ProxmoxVEx open source? ∨
ProxmoxVEx is source-available software under the ProxmoxVEx Source-Available License v1.0. The full source code is viewable and auditable, and non-production use — personal evaluation, homelabs, development, testing and security auditing — is free. Production use requires a commercial license; see Pricing for tiers.
Do I need a subscription? ∨
No. The core engine and many plugins are free. Paid subscriptions unlock advanced plugins, priority support and multi-site features.
What hypervisors are supported? ∨
Proxmox VE (8.0+ and 9.x), VMware ESXi/vCenter and XCP-ng are supported as first-class managed clusters. Hyper-V and Nutanix AHV are covered through dedicated plugins, and the plugin model can also surface data from Docker Swarm and other platforms.
How is data secured? ∨
Sensitive fields are encrypted at rest with Fernet, audit logs are HMAC-signed, and authentication supports LDAP, OIDC, TOTP and WebAuthn/FIDO2.
Can I write my own plugin? ∨
Yes. ProxmoxVEx exposes a third-party plugin API. Plugins can include UI bundles, i18n files, settings and background tasks.
How do I get started? ∨
On a fresh server, run the one-command installer — apt update && apt install -y curl && curl -fsSL https://proxmoxvex.com/downloads/install.sh | sudo bash on Debian/Ubuntu (install curl first with dnf or pacman on other distros) — which opens a guided setup that checks prerequisites, offers pending OS updates, and installs dependencies, PostgreSQL, the release archive and a systemd service in one pass. Docker Compose and the Debian package are alternatives. A first-time setup wizard guides you through creating the administrator account. See the Getting Started guide for per-OS instructions.
Where can I get support? ∨
Community support is available for the free Community tier. Advanced and Corporate tiers include email and priority support.
What languages does the interface support? ∨
The ProxmoxVEx UI and this site are available in English, German, Spanish and French. Language can be switched from the login page or the user menu, and plugins ship translations in the same four locales.
Can it convert between VMs and containers? ∨
Yes. The built-in converter migrates workloads between LXC containers and VMs (and back) for Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine, Rocky, CentOS, RHEL, AlmaLinux, Fedora and Arch guests. It also performs guest-aware disk resize — grow and shrink — and clone-replace across LVM, LVM-thin, ZFS, directory, NFS and CIFS storage, with pre-flight checks and per-job progress in the UI.
